Dr Sanduk Ruit is A New Vision’s Co-Founder and Director who is known as the God of Sight
He has done over 100,000 surgeries to date.
Dr Sanduk Ruit changed the whole game of curing cataract blindness. The amount of USD 200 versus USD 3 in the video refers to the cost of manufacturing quality lenses on his own at his hospital lab in Nepal.
A New Vision has also been using the lenses that Dr Ruit produces for our patients. This is why our surgery only costs the donors SGD 100 per eye. This covers costs such as lens, all medical consumables, patients and medical team’s transportation, accommodation, meals, community education, pre-screening, and a full one month post operative care and check up. The patients receive the quality surgery for free.

AMBON Grandma Salma March 2018
When cataracts brought Mr Umar’s vision to total blindness, his wife had to be the man of the family. For three years his wife was also the “doer of everything” inside and outside of the house. Despite a myriad of powerful emotions which often crept into her heart, his wife did her best without yielding.
At A New Vision’s cataract surgical outreach in Ambon, Indonesia, Mr Umar registered for our free cataract surgery. In addition to gracing Mr Umar normal vision, our free cataract surgery also frees the wife up from the condition she did not sign up for.
Significant impact like this is what drives us to continue our work.
Ambon UMAR March 2018
For people like Grandma Salma, being brave somehow is not enough. Despite what the neighbours say about how painful and bloody cataract surgery is, she never has fear. It was just that she had no money to afford being on the surgery table. Only until A New Vision came to her hometown in Ambon, Indonesia, 7 years since she got blind, Grandma Salma could finally regain her eyesight.
“It was just a little painful during the anaesthetic injection. Other than that, I felt zero pain,” Grandma Salma proudly informs, breaking the myths she heard for years.
Poverty and lack of knowledge prevent many people in Indonesia from obtaining their right to eye care. Free surgery and community eye care education has been the core focus of A New Vision’s cataract surgical outreach. We believe that people like Grandma Salma should live a life full of light.
Watch the story of brave Grandma Salma walking out of her dark life in the video above.
