2014 was a tough year for Sutarno (57 years old). He lost his sight from cataract. Before he became blind, Sutarno was a construction worker in Bali. It was difficult for him to keep his job when his sight gradually disappeared. He kept hitting his fingers with hammer because he couldn’t see clearly when nailing.
Journey to Kertosono
After he lost his job, Sutarno took a 15-hour bus home to Kertosono in East Java. It was a difficult and sad journey, knowing he was becoming blind and there would be no more income to bring home.
Back home, Sutarno’s wife, Sri Utami took him to eye doctors in Jombang and Surabaya, all said he needed surgery but he had no money.
One day, Sri Utami heard from neighbours about an eye camp we were about to hold in Jombang in January 2015. Filled with hope and excitement, Sri Utami took her husband to Jombang. The operation was a success.
Successful Operation
Sutarno is now working, building buildings in Surabaya.
We must repay this kindness which we have been blessed to receive. We must help others who are blind.
Satarno, after his successful operation
Since then, Sri Utami has always brought patients to each and every of our eye camps in East Java.
